Cambodia: the leader of the opposition in exile was pardoned

The leader of the Cambodian opposition Sam Rainsy, who lives in exile in France to escape the prison, has been pardoned by the king.

At the legislative approach in Cambodia, the opposition leader was pardoned Friday by King King Norodom Sihamoni. The grace of Sam Rainsy was requested by the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Sen, "in a spirit of reconciliation." A government official said the opposition would somehow "not right" to vote.

Sam Rainsy immediately announced his return to Cambodia "in the coming days," on 19 July. "It's a small victory for democracy that the opposition leader be allowed to be in the country during the election campaign and on election day," he commented after the news.

Sam Rainsy, leader of Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) lives in France as an exile to escape a total sentence of 11 years in prison in different cases, convictions that his supporters deem policies.

The opposition denounces a widespread system of corruption and the stranglehold of Hun Sen clan on all the organs of power. And the US in particular have expressed doubts about the fairness of the electoral process without the effective participation of Sam Rainsy.

Vote or be a candidate

Rainsy is considered the most important opponent of the Prime Minister, who won power in 1985 and promised to keep it up to its 74 years. But the opponent can not vote or be a candidate, the electoral commission had forbidden him to attend.

In 2008, the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) Hun Sen won 90 of 123 seats in the National Assembly, against 26 for the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) and three for the Party of Human Rights (PDH) who decided to unite in the NIPA for the next election.
