Alex Salmond has announced his intention to resign after the defeat of the net yes in the referendum on independence for Scotland on Thursday. It should also give up his position as head of the SNP.

His estate should occur after the SNP conference on 13 November. His likely successor could be the Deputy Prime Minister and Scottish number 2 of the Scottish National Party, Nicola Sturgeon.

After weeks of intense suspense, not from the camp won by 55.3% to 44.7% yes. The difference is important, and record participation of 84.6% amplifies the verdict.

This result is a bitter disappointment for Alex Salmond --Even if Scotland should inherit from increased autonomy consolation prize.

"This has been the privilege of my life to serve Scotland as Prime Minister but as I said throughout the campaign for the referendum.. It's not about me or the SNP This is more important than that, "he insisted.

The resignation of Alex Salmond, which will take effect in two months as a surprise to the extent that he was able to make up the score-independence (44.7%) to unimaginable heights there is little.

"My time as a leader is nearly complete, said an emotional and lyrical Salmond. But for Scotland, the campaign (for independence) continues and the dream shall never die."
